At North Hinksey we recognise that the teaching of DT requires a different approach to other subjects. Our curriculum builds on the fact that most inventions come from ideas that are already in existence and over time are gradually improved. As such, we begin projects using designers as inspiration, modelling the design process to pupils, looking at the weakness of designs and making adjustments accordingly.
Our aim is that children build a DT schema throughout their time in school that supports them to take inspiration from design; master practical techniques and design, make, evaluate and improve their own products. The children revisit the following threshold concepts as part of our spiral curriculum:
This concept involves developing the skills needed to make high quality products (we have highlighted a range of skills but they may be added to or changed as appropriate for your school).
This concept involves developing the process of design thinking and seeing design as a process.
This concept involves appreciating the design process that has influenced the products we use in everyday life.
