Cygnus reflect and review 6th Nov

Dear Cygnus Families,

What a fantastic, and busy, first week back it's been! This was the children's first half-term break since starting school, but they have done a great job of settling back into their routines as well as adjusting to some slight changes in them too.

Reminders

  • Remembrance Day: Children have the opportunity to bring in some money for a poppy, wristband, poppy pin, pencil or poppy sticker next Monday and Tuesday. Each item costs £1 and is donated to charity.
  • Book Monday: Please make sure that the children bring back any books that they may have taken out over the lasthalf term.
  • Forest School: The children have Forest School next Friday so please make sure they come to school with suitable clothes that they can put on to ensure they have a great time.

What We’ve Been Up To

  • We started our new Magic Moments topic, Diwali and Bonfire Night! We began by looking at many objects, including a diya and a picture of a rangoli pattern, and talked about why people celebrate with lights. Diwali is this Sunday, so we’ve been learning that lots of people celebrate the festival of lights with diyas, rangoli, sweets and time with family.
  • We resumed our drawing club, thinking about many things including what our dream celebration would look like and what codes we could use to start and stop our celebration.
  • In art we tried wax relief, drawing invisible rangoli patterns with white wax crayons, then painting over them with watercolour to watch the patterns magically appear. The children loved the reveal!
  • We learned about Bonfire Night and who Guy Fawkes was, thinking about how it remembers something that happened a long time ago. We talked about how to stay safe around fireworks.
  • We compared Diwali and Bonfire Night, thinking about what’s the same and what’s different.
  • In maths we continued subitising, counting and much more, including spotting and counting diyas, tea lights and sparks on firework pictures.
  • We learned the poem Remember, Remember to help us better understand Bonfire Night.
  • We explored lots of new provision, including a Diwali counting tuff tray, rangoli patterns outside, a new post box area, and much more!
  • We continued our phonics journey, revisiting what we covered last halfterm to strengthen our knowledge.
  • We talked about being a good friend and how we can be wise.

Next Week

  • Monday: Book Day and PE. Please make sure that the children come in their PE kit and bring any books that they have taken out over the last halfterm.
  • Tuesday: Nothing to remember today!
  • Wednesday: PE and Remembrance Day. Please make sure that the children come in their PE kit.
  • Thursday: Oxford Science Visit! Nothing to remember today but it will be a brilliant day for the children.
  • Friday: Forest School. Please make sure that the children come in with their outdoor clothes ready for Forest School in the afternoon!

On the 11th November our Columba and Aquila class will be gathering at the Commonwealth War Graves at Botley Cemetery at 10:45am for an Act of Remembrance. We welcome all families and members of the wider community to join us.

OPEN MORNING

As part of our Open Day, we are delighted to welcome a local community artist who will help us begin a journey of capturing and celebrating the legacy of North Hinksey CE Primary School as we move forward with our building works.

Throughout this academic year, we will be working alongside Amy, our artist, to co-create a special art installation that honours the school's rich history and heritage while celebrating its future. We know that North Hinksey holds a very special place in the hearts of our community, and we want this project to reflect the memories, stories and experiences of the many people who have been part of its journey.

The first stage of this community art project begins on Saturday, when Amy will be supporting members of the community to create small pieces of collage artwork and share their memories of North Hinksey. We warmly invite everyone to take part – whether you are a current pupil or family member, a former pupil who attended North Hinksey at any point in its history, or another member of our wider community.

We would love to see as many people as possible joining us for this first stage and contributing to something that will become a lasting celebration of our school's story.

If you are unable to attend on Saturday but would like to be involved, there will be further opportunities to contribute throughout the academic year. We will share details of these in due course.

Dates for the Future:
7th November - Open Day 10am-12pm

13th November - Flu Vaccinations

11th December -  HSA Christmas Bazaar 5pm- 7pm

11th December - Christmas Dinner Day - children can wear Christmas Jumpers

14th-18th December - Spirit Week - details to follow

16th December - Nativity Play 2pm

18th December - Term ends at 1pm

Thank you all for making it such a lovely first week back. This is all a new experience to the children and little wobbles are to be expected, but the perseverance and effort they’ve shown to overcome these wobbles should make you all so proud! I hope you all have a great weekend, and happy Diwali to everyone celebrating on Sunday!

Best wishes,

The Cygnus Team.
