design & technology

At North Hinksey we recognise that the teaching of DT requires a different approach to other subjects.  Our curriculum builds on the fact that most inventions come from ideas that are already in existence and over time are gradually improved.  As such we begin projects using designers as inspiration, modelling to pupils that the design process is iterate looking at the weakness of designs and making adjustments accordingly.

Our aim is that throughout their time in school children build a DT schema  that supports them to take inspiration from design; master practical techniques and design, make, evaluate and improve their own products.  The children revisit the following threshold concepts as part of our spiral curriculum:

  • Master practical skills

This concept involves developing the skills needed to make high quality products (we have highlighted a range of skills but they may be added to or changed as appropriate for your school).

  • Design, make, evaluate and improve

This concept involves developing the process of design thinking and seeing design as a process.

  • Take inspiration from design throughout history

This concept involves appreciating the design process that has influenced the products we use in everyday life.
