geography

At North Hinksey we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world.  Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, it's interconnectedness and their place in it.  The geography curriculum at North Hinksey enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which are used to promote their moral, social and cultural development.

Our topic based curriculum is designed to ensure that teaching equips children with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural & human environments.  We seek to inspire children to be curious and fascinated about the world and its people. The children revisit the following threshold concepts as part of our spiral curriculum:

  • Investigate places

This concept involves understanding the geographical location of places and their physical and human features.

  • Investigate patterns

This concept involves understanding the relationships between the physical features of places and the human activity within them, and the appreciation of how the world’s natural resources are used and transported.

  • Communicate geographically

This concept involves understanding geographical representations, vocabulary and techniques.
