Columba & Aquila - Reflect and Review

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a wonderful week we had! It was great to see so many of you during our first parents’ evening, and we are looking forward to seeing the rest of the parents very soon. The next parents’ evening will take place on the 15th of October.

As writers, we continued to use Skellig for inspiration and created fascinating mystery stories. The children impressed us with their use of complex sentences, figurative language and powerful punctuation to capture the reader’s attention.

As mathematicians, Columba ordered and compared numbers within 1,000,000 and practised rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000, while Aquila focused on long division and developed confidence using different methods to solve calculations.

As geographers, we explored how settlements grow over time. The children compared historic and modern maps of Oxford and examined land use zones across the city.

Columba also really enjoyed their Bikeability sessions, gaining practical skills and developing a strong understanding of how to cycle safely on today’s roads.

Next week

In English, we will begin to build non-chronological reports. In Geography, we will be carrying out fieldwork in North Hinksey, recording and presenting geographical data. In Maths, Aquila will focus on solving problems with division, while Columba will practise rounding within 1,000,000.

Home learning

Please remember to return the Maths Practice Journals on Monday.

Columba class should continue to practise spellings from the Years 3–4 and Years 5–6 word lists. All children are encouraged to revisit the words in their spelling logbooks regularly throughout the week.

Children in Columba class who want to take part in their school council election (who have not been a council member before) should be prepared to do this on Friday.
