Columba and Aquila - Reflect and Review
Dear parents and carers,
We had a great first week back after half term, including our exciting trip to Portsmouth. We visited the Mary Rose Museum and HMS Warrior, where the children enjoyed a fascinating look at British naval history from the Tudor era through to Victorian times.
At the Mary Rose Museum, we explored thousands of authentic Tudor artefacts, discovered personal items belonging to the crew and experienced interactive displays that brought history to life. On HMS Warrior, we explored the vast decks, visited the impressive engine rooms and learned about life at sea in the 1860s.
In English, we explored the features of a play script, focusing on stage directions, powerful verbs and adjectives, and dialogue.
As mathematicians, Columba focused on adding and subtracting decimals, ensuring that decimal points were lined up correctly and columns were accurately aligned.
As historians, we continued our learning about Elizabethan times, carrying out research and making comparisons between the Tudor and Elizabethan periods and the Vikings.
Next Week
In English, we will write and edit play scripts using the features we have explored, drawing inspiration from Macbeth. We will also design costumes for the characters in our play scripts.
In history, we will continue our investigations and update our presentations about life in Elizabethan times, considering whether it really was all banquets and fun.
In maths, Columba will multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000, applying their understanding through reasoning problems and colourful challenges.
Home Learning
Please continue to encourage your child to read daily and practise their spellings regularly, as short and consistent practice makes a real difference to confidence and fluency.
Maths Practice Journals are due on Monday and will be checked in class.
Columba Spelling Challenge: Children are encouraged to practise their spelling words and be ready to show their teacher—they can earn raffle tickets towards a big prize for their effort and progress.
