Columba and Aquila - Reflect and Review

Dear parents and carers,

We had a great week of learning across both classes.

As writers, we planned, drafted and edited a balanced argument, using connectives, modal verbs and formal language to present both sides clearly. We explored the key question from The Journey by Francesca Sanna: Should the mother leave her country or stay?

As mathematicians, Columba stretched their thinking through a range of colourful challenges, practising short division and explaining, justifying and proving their answers. Aquila focused on ratio, using mathematical language, symbols and scale drawings.

As historians, we explored migration, learning about push and pull factors and comparing geographical differences between the Caribbean islands and the UK.

On Thursday, Columba took part in the first of five Climate Education Workshops. The children found the session interesting and engaged well in discussions about climate change and its impact on our planet.

Home Learning

Please encourage your child to practise the words recorded in their spelling logbooks regularly at home. A little practice each day will really support their confidence and progress in spelling.

Maths Practice Journals are due on Monday, and children should also read daily using books from the class library.

Next Week

In English, we will begin exploring the features of persuasive writing, drawing inspiration from The Journey.

In Maths, Columba will continue working on short division with remainders, as well as problem solving involving multiplication and division. Aquila will focus on scale factors, ratio and proportion problems.

In History, we will learn about the Windrush journey, exploring migration from Jamaica to Tilbury Docks in Essex, the conditions on board the ship, and the experiences of migrants arriving in Britain.

Other Information

We are asking that parents support us in stopping items being brought in from home. Increasingly we are seeing toys, soft toys and fidgets being brought into school. If your child has a need that requires this then this will have previously been discussed with your child's teacher or our Senco, to ensure that it supports their learning needs. Please do not send your child in with something without having had this discussion and agreement first.
