Columba and Aquila - Reflect and Review

We had another busy week! Columba and Aquila explored amazing houses from around the world and began creating imaginative stories about how people live and eat. These workshops are part of the LEGO Architecture series run by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Oxford Brookes University. The children enjoyed the first workshop and are looking forward to the next one next week.

As writers, Aquila began building non-chronological reports, while Columba focused on using adverbs and adverbial phrases. They wrote some fantastic letters using these features and the first-person perspective.

As geographers, we carried out fieldwork in North Hinksey, recording and presenting geographical data. In addition, we applied our human geography knowledge to design an ideal settlement, considering how people live, work, and use the land.

As mathematicians, Aquila concentrated on solving division problems, while Columba practised rounding numbers within 1,000,000 and reading and writing Roman numerals up to 1,000.

As historians, both classes visited the Museum of Oxford to explore the story of William Morris and how he shaped the city into what it is today.

Next Week

On Tuesday, we will take part in our second LEGO workshop. As part of the harvest celebrations, we will be attending a church service at St Peter and St Pauls on Thursday.

In English, both classes will continue learning about the features of non-chronological reports and will write their own. In Maths, Columba will focus on multiplication, multiples, and factors. Aquila will focus on rounding decimals as well as multiplying and dividing them by 10,100, and 1000. In RE, In RE, we will begin our new enquiry, asking: How far could a Sikh go for their religion?

Children in Aquila class who want to take part in their school council election (who have not been a council member before) should be prepared to do this on Monday.

Home Learning

Please remember to return the Maths Practice Journals on Monday. Both classes should continue to practise spellings from the Years 3–4 and Years 5–6-word lists. All children are encouraged to revisit the words in their spelling logbooks regularly throughout the week.

We have also launched our Reading Miles Global Challenge! The children can read their way around the world, tracking their progress in the Reading Passport. Remember, every 10 minutes of reading earns 500 reading miles!
