Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review

Dear Parents and Carers,

It was lovely to see so many of you on Parents’ Evening and hear how the children are finding school from your perspective. We look forward to seeing the rest of you in a couple of weeks!

This week in Corvus, as Writers, we have been editing our stories about the storm and have created a final draft. We have also written persuasive letter to an author, persuading him to come and visit (which excitingly, he will be doing - more on that shortly if it hasn’t come to you already!) In Draco, we have continued to explore how writers use figurative language to capture the reader’s imagination and found a number of examples from our class text. Recently, we have started Oracy which aims to develop our oral communication skills. We have been looking at statements and deciding whether we agree or disagree with the statement.  A member of the class will usually instigate the discussion using a gesture to signify when they would like to speak. We've also been learning the meaning of the following words: melancholic, wading and spindly.

As Mathematicians, in Corvus, we have concluded our Place Value unit and have made a start on Addition and Subtraction, reinforcing our knowledge of number bonds within 10. Draco, have been learning how to round 4-digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 and using number lines to guide us.

As Scientists, we have started to explore the characteristics of sound, we have been exploring the characteristics of sound, exploiting the relationship between volume and distance, before designing our own methods of soundproofing, which we will be making next week.

A Request for Corvus Parents

If you have anything that you think might be suitable for soundproofing that you don’t mind bringing in (cotton wool, bubble wrap etc.), it would be fantastic if we could have it on Monday please. We have some but could use more if possible.

Next Week

Next week in English, we will be writing in role as Roz the robot. We will also write instructions, telling her how to escape from bears and focusing on imperative verbs. In Maths, Corvus will be continuing our study of Addition and Subtraction - working ones, tens and hundreds and crossing boundaries and Draco will continue with their focus on place value and rounding. In Science, Corvus will be creating, testing and evaluating our soundproof designs.

Home-learning

All the children should have a book selected from our class library. We are currently in the middle of assessing which book band children should be reading from - if you notice that your child is reading a text that is too easy/difficult for them, please ask them to highlight this to the class teacher and change their book.

Maths Homework books will be due on Monday so please make sure that they are brought in for marking.
