Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review
Dear Parents,
This week, we had our performances of Hansel and Gretel. It was fantastic to see the students standing up in front of the school and so many adults and delivering their lines so confidently. The hard work that we have put in on the songs really paid off and we were really proud of them!
In English, Corvus have been using colourful semantics to build sentences about water, using images of water in various forms as stimulus. We learned how to use inverted commas to denote direct speech and planned a big write about a memory associated with water. In Maths, we have continued studying Length and Perimeter, adding and subtracting lengths and getting more comfortable converting between different units of measure. In Geography, we have learned the various stages and features of a river and learned about the risks and causes of flooding. In Draco, we immersed ourselves in our text, The Rhythm of The Rain. First, we looked at an illustration featured on the book’s endpapers and formed our own responses about the image and jotted down annotations – words, phrases, sentences – that captured what we noticed. Then, we created a detailed description based upon an interpretation of another illustration in the story using adverbs, verbs and prepositional phrases. Vocabulary: pattering, lashing and cascading. Spellings: adoration, temptation, location, exploration.
As Mathematicians, we started looking at fractions using Cuisenaire rods and dividing a whole into equal parts. We also played a fractions game whereby each player needed to find one whole. It has been lovely to see the children so engaged in our topic on rivers! Today, we produced detailed diagrams depicting the river’s upper, middle and lower course. Then we explored photographs and newspaper clippings about flooding around Oxford and considered the impact flooding has on people’s lives. We adhered to the role of farmers and homeowners and answered questions about our personal experiences of flooding.
Next week
In English, we will write and edit our descriptive recount about our water memory. In Maths, we will study what perimeter is and how to calculate it. In Geography, we will learn about the River Thames and in Science, we will learn about the states of matter.
