Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review
Dear Parents and Carers,
As writers, in Corvus, we have this week identified animal survival techniques from our book, The Wild Robot. We wrote in role as Roz, observing the animal behaviour and drawing conclusions on when it might be useful for us as a robot that is new to the world. In Draco, we immersed ourselves in our class text by creating a piece of drama focusing on a passage from Chapter 21 entitled, The Introduction. We looked at the narrative carefully and imagined the positioning of the characters. Our aim was to retrieve information from the text in order to make inferences about the characters’ feelings and behaviour. It was a real pleasure to see the children enjoy outdoor learning where they were able to make use of our lovely premises.
As Mathematicians, Corvus have worked on our knowledge of addition and subtraction of ones, tens and hundreds and started to cross tens boundaries. Draco have been building on their rounding knowledge and using this to estimate the answers to calculations.
In Corvus, as Scientists, we have continued our exploration of sound. We have designed and built soundproof boxes, recording the data accurately, thinking about what made our boxes successful and what would have made them even better.
In Draco, as artists, we continued exploring gestural drawings. We looked at various examples of cave art, thinking about how the artist had captured movement and expression. Using our imagination, we pretended to be cavemen seated around a campfire and we thought about how burnt pieces of wood could be used for mark making, and we created handprints using charcoal and willow sticks.
Next Week
Next week in English, we will be preparing questions to ‘hotseat’ Roz and explore her decision-making when taking care of a newborn gosling. We will debate whether a robot should be entrusted with a gosling, using evidence from the text. In Draco, we will begin adapting a chapter from the Wild Robot into a playscript. In Maths, Corvus will be subtracting across tens and hundreds boundaries before (excitingly!) introducing column addition, and Draco will be considering how to use their existing number facts knowledge to work out bigger numbers! In Computing, both classes will be recording and editing audio.
Home-learning
A reminder that all the children should have a book selected from our class library. If you notice that your child is reading a text that is too easy/difficult for them, please ask them to highlight this to the class teacher and change their book.
Maths Homework books will be due on Monday so please make sure that they are brought in for marking. Apologies to Corvus that Week 1 hasn’t yet been marked - I was unfortunately poorly on Monday so we will mark both weeks this coming Monday.
