Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review

Dear Parents,

Thank you to all the family members who were able to support the children by attending the concert in Christ Church Cathedral. It was fantastic and the singers were a credit to the school. Hopefully they enjoyed singing as much as we did listening to them!

In English, Corvus have continued on our Shackleton journey. We have been working towards writing a letter from a member of the crew to their family partway through the expedition, which we completed today. In Draco, in  the role of Frank Hurley, we have been learning how to write a job application letter addressed to Ernest Shackleton.  We have generated complimentary words and phrases to flatter Ernest Shackleton and used relative clauses to provide extra information about our skills and experiences.

In Maths, Corvus have been learning about multiples and started to multiply 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the grid method. In Draco, we have started dividing 2-digit numbers by a 1-digit number using remainders. We used Base 10 to illustrate the sharing structure of division and  see what is meant by the term ‘remainder’.  We were very pleased to see a number of children progressing onto the colourful challenges and describing their selected  mathematical methods.

In History, our Antarctic expedition has continued, as we have been forced to abandon our ship, the Endurance. We have camped out on the ice for months and set sail in lifeboats for Elephant Island, with tragic consequences for the animals that we had brought with us. Draco have been been learning about sources and evaluating their reliability.

Next week

As writers, Corvus will be editing and finalising our letters to family from aboard the Endurance. Draco we will draft our application letters and deliver them to a member of staff who will pretend to be Ernest Shackleton. As Mathematicians, Corvus will be starting to divide 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. Corvus, in Computing, we will start to look at the internet - what it is, how it works and how we can use it safely. As Historians, Corvus will conclude our study of Shackleton’s epic adventure with a debate and a recap of its key events.

Home Learning
We will have Maths homework due on Monday so please ensure that the students bring in their books. Times Table Rock Stars practice is proving very helpful so do encourage your children to log in at home.

Other Information

We are asking that parents support us in stopping items being brought in from home. Increasingly we are seeing toys, soft toys and fidgets being brought into school. If your child has a need that requires this then this will have previously been discussed with your child's teacher or our Senco to ensure that it supports their learning needs. Please do not send your child in with something without having had this discussion and agreement first.
