Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review

Dear Parents, 

It has been quite the week with the heat! The children have coped remarkably well and have tried their best to concentrate. 

On Monday, we had a really interesting trip into Oxford. In the Oxford Museum in the morning, we investigated the history of transport in the city, building on our knowledge from last term’s history unit. We found lots of different objects around the museum and even got to handle some; we explored maps of the local area; we even got to dress up in historic clothing! We also sat in the shade in Christ Church Meadow and painted watercolour pictures of the river, cows and particularly the local ducks! 

Corvus

We have managed to take advantage of the cooler temperatures early in the morning - planning, writing and editing a recount of Monday’s trip to Oxford in English. We very much enjoyed playing with water to stay cool each morning and have had a variety of different activities in the afternoons - learning about plants with the help of David Attenborough, taking part in art tutorials, and painting using natural ingredients such as turmeric and kimchi. 

We also managed to have our conversation about Relationships and Sex Education, looking at the differences in body parts between girls and boys, the ways in which we are all the same, and using the NSPCC’s PANTS resources. 

Draco 

This week, despite the heat and humidity, Draco persevered in their learning. We continued reading ‘When I Was a Rat,’ engaging in comprehension questions that helped develop our oracy skills. Our spelling focus was on the short ‘u’ sound spelled ‘ou,’ and the following words caught our attention: toughest, enough, trouble, and younger. As mathematicians, we explored position and direction by translating different shapes onto a grid. We refreshed our understanding of key vocabulary, including vertices, coordinates, x-axis, and y-axis. In the afternoons, we immersed ourselves in Art to help regulate our emotions and maintain calmness. We studied the artist Van Gogh and created sunflower pictures inspired by one of his most famous paintings.

Upcoming Events

Next week, we look forward to participating in our ongoing project with Oxford Song. Unfortunately, due to severe weather, we were unable to take part in the project this week. We are excited to see the team of musicians leading the project next Wednesday!

We will be going to the Cutty Sark on Tuesday 30th. Please remember that it is a long day, with an early start and late finish - children should be at school for 7:10am and we are not expecting to get back until around 5:00, though this will of course depend on traffic. We’ll keep you informed via the Whatsapp groups.

The adults in Draco would appreciate children being sent in with an empty cereal box this week. They will be used to make some clocks!
