Cygnus - Reflect and Review
Dear Reception families
This week we looked at The Gingerbread Man in Drawing club. Our vocabulary included: leap, accelerate, pursue, block, cunning, soggy, mocking and disappointed.
The Gingerbread Man ran to the river on our first day, we wondered if the little old woman could have baked a stinky cheese man on day two and finally we wondered if we could make a hat to protect us from the stinky cheese man! The last drawing club idea sparked some really innovative thinking!
The children built on their biscuit making session last week by decorating biscuits this week. They could choose their own design and were quite creative, though we had to capture their artistic efforts quickly before the biscuits were munched!
We explored traditional rhyme this week with the Hickory Dickory Dock Rhyme and so our lunchtime poem was about mice and whether they are nice! It was a longer, eight line poem to challenge the children to process and retain more information. They rose to the challenge well.
Mathematics classes focused on composition of numbers. Can three still be three if the things we count are different sizes, shapes or colours? The children were quick to notice that the number is still the same even if the things are different. We introduced the concept that all numbers which are 1 or greater than 1, can be made from combinations of 1’s.
The children have now learned their first 18 sounds.
This week we learned the sounds: f, e, l, h
Please practice the sounds with the children at home.
We sent a letter home on Friday in book bags to suggest some words to work on for word building. Do try some practice at home. The more the children practise the sounds, the faster they will become confident to build words independently.

On Friday we had our second forest school session. This is this week they made binoculars
The children talked about camouflage. How can we hide in the grass? What can we see?
Next week our rhyme focus is Little Miss Muffet and we will be reading Hansel and Gretel.
We will be focusing on history next week with discussion about historical detail in Fairy Tales and story and comparison to how things are now.

Coming soon:
We are excited to announce our first school trip! We have a fantastic opportunity to see the local celebrity singer, songwriter and presenter of the CBeebies TV show Popcast, Nick Cope, in concert. Nick’s catchy rhyming songs are an integral part of our class life as we tidy up to his tidy up song every day!
Here is the link to the song if you’d like to listen: Tidy Up
The concert will be held at St Frideswides Primary School on Wednesday October the 22nd.
We are very lucky that we do not need to pay for the concert, just the cost of the coach. You will have received information about the cost per child and payment on the MCAS app.
The trip will be entirely within the school day so drop off and pick up will be at usual times.
Coffee van: Friday October 17th
Notices:
It was wonderful to see so many of you at parents evening this week. We look forward to the next parents evening on the 15th October. If you have not already booked a slot, please do.
Please ensure that any emails to inform the school of changes to pick up arrangements for the children go to the school office: office@nhps.org.uk and not the Early Years email account. Thank you.
Please make sure the children have a waterproof coat every day. We have outdoor play as often as possible and we need to be ready for changes in the weather.
Children also need a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into to come into the classroom and a spare set of clothes, including pants and socks, for any accidents.
Wishing you all a great weekend.
Best wishes
The Reception Team
