Cygnus - Reflect and Review

Dear Reception families

This week we looked at Hansel and Gretel in Drawing club. Our story telling used the music from Engelbert Humperdink’s opera which the children really enjoyed. Our vocabulary included: confectionary, wicked, double, scary, cauldron, swish, piercing and innocent.

The story allowed us to think like historians on Friday as we discussed how things (clothes, kitchen equipment, buildings etc.) looked long ago in stories and how they look now. The children talked about how their own homes compared to those in the stories.

We explored traditional rhyme this week with Little Miss Muffet. We had a BBC listen and play session. We listened to the story of Miss Muffet and practised our poem about spiders together. The children decided that spiders aren’t so bad, unless you are a fly!

Mathematics classes focused on subitising again this week. We challenged the children to see, rather than count items. We subitised all sorts of things in the classroom.

A great phrase to use with the children at home is ‘What do you see?’ rather than ‘How many?’. We also thought about the concepts of bigger and smaller using the Goldilocks and the three bears story.

The children have now learned their first 23 sounds.

We introduced some new Squiggle Wiggle moves this week with under and over the hump movements to help embed writing the shapes of u and n.

This week we learned the sounds: r, j, v, y, w

Please practice the sounds with the children at home.

Do try some practice word building at home. Suggestions are in your bookbags.

This is the link to saying the pure sounds for set 1:Read Write Inc.: How to say the set one, set two and set three sounds

Next week our rhyme focus is I’m a little teapot and we will be reading The Velveteen Rabbit.

Our personal, social and emotional development focus will be love and self regulation.

Notices:

Please ensure that any emails to inform the school of changes to pick up arrangements for the children go to the school office: office@nhps.org.uk and not the Early Years email account. Thank you.

Please make sure the children have a waterproof coat every day. We have outdoor play as often as possible and we need to be ready for changes in the weather.

Children also need a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into to come into the classroom and a spare set of clothes, including pants and socks, for any accidents.

Wishing you all a great weekend.

Best wishes

The Reception Team
