Cygnus - Reflect and Review

Dear Reception families

We have continued to explore the theme of long ago this week. It is a tricky concept for the children and we have been thinking of different ways to explore what time means.

In Maths we considered how long it took Tom to paint the living room with the tin of paint he found under the sink (Nick Sharratt’s very funny book ‘The time it took Tom’), how many claps and jumps we can do in 30 seconds and the structure of the week and what we do on the different days. The children looked at clocks and we started to think about how we show time on a clockface. We’ve also revisited the part and whole structure of the numbers within 10.

This week our Drawing Club book was ‘The Adventures of Egg box dragon’ by Richard Adams (the author of Watership Down). The story involves an Eggbox dragon coming to life and having the enviable skill of being able to find just about anything! We had some great vocabulary this week: admire, magic, reveal, rescue, find, nervous, special and magnificent.

Big 3 and Me this week focused on Looking after Myself. The children learned the British sign language signs for caring, noticed and sure. The Big 3 and Me challenge this week was to try and use our thoughts to help us feel better. We talked about the power of positive thinking.

We have looked at castles, knights and dragons this week and the children drew some fantastic castle pictures after we looked at some real castles. We have built a cardboard castle in class, designed flags for our class castle, cooked dinner in the castle mud kitchen and poured ‘red wine’ for the guests into goblets and made eggbox dragons.

We rounded off our week with our Mother’s Day tea. The children delighted everyone with their singing and treated their mum’s to a tasty biscuit and drink. They presented their home made placemat and card to their mum's together with a Daffodil to celebrate Spring.

It was great to see many of you at this week's parents evening. Thank you for attending.

The children are now all reading books in phonics and will be bringing new books home every few days. Please make sure they always have their reading books in their books bags and bring the bags to school every day. The day we change books will change depending on the timetable.

Children need a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into to come into the classroom and a spare set of clothes, including pants and socks, for any accidents. These should be brought to school every day please.

Please make sure the children have a waterproof coat every day. We have outdoor play as often as possible and we need to be ready for changes in the weather. Please also bring a hat, scarf and gloves for the colder weather.

If your child is going home with someone else, please make sure you email the school office to advise us of the change: office@nhps.org.uk

Best wishes

The Reception Team
