Cygnus - Reflect and Review

Dear Reception families

This week we learned about astronauts. Who are they and what do they do? How do they float?

They children heard some stories read to us from space by real astronauts on the International space station. We watched the crew of astronauts from the International space station land back on earth after they had to come home early because of a medical emergency.

Maths this week has focused on counting and ordinality. The children had to put the mixed up Numberblocks in the right order by considering which numbers were bigger and which were smaller. We used the staircase pattern to visualise ‘one more’ and ‘one less’ and they practiced making their own staircases and matching them to Numberblocks and abstract numbers.

In Music, we have started exploring songs from the Hansel and Gretel opera. We began by reading the story of Hansel and Gretel, learning about the different characters. Then we started learning the song 'Little brother dance with me' where the two children are bored of doing chores in the house and decide to sing and dance together. We used clapping and actions to help us learn the rhythms and words within the song.

On 5th March, we will be singing some songs from the Hansel and Gretel Opera as part of World Book Day. We will be inviting parents to attend the event in the school hall nearer the time.

In Big3 and Me this week we talked about ‘being happy’. The children learned the British sign language signs for happy, tearful and disappointed. We had stories from the Big3 and Me animals about each of the feelings and we matched an ‘inside weather’ sign to each feeling. We talked about things that make us happy and the Big 3 and Me challenge this week was to greet people with a friendly hello.

On Friday, the children had their first outdoor learning session this term. They were very pleased to be outside and had great fun exploring.

Notices:

If your child is going home with someone else, please make sure you email the school office to advise us of the change: office@nhps.org.uk

Please can all children bring a book bag daily to allow us to send written work and books home when needed? Small rucksacks are too small to accommodate A4 paper and library books.

Please make sure the children have a waterproof coat every day. We have outdoor play as often as possible and we need to be ready for changes in the weather. Please also bring a hat, scarf and gloves for the colder weather.

Children also need a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into to come into the classroom and a spare set of clothes, including pants and socks, for any accidents.

Best wishes

The Reception Team
