Cygnus - Reflect and Review

Dear Reception and Nursery families

This week we have been thinking about journeys around the world. We thought again about maps by reading our drawing club book ‘The map of me’ by Nicola Davies. The girl in the story moves to a new country and a new home and feels overwhelmed by the hugeness of it all. Drawing a map with her mum to help her get around makes her feel safer. She draws a bigger map to include her Granny who is oceans away and then one about the past and one about her hopes for the future. Vocabulary this week: neighbourhood, jumble, spaghetti, favourite, huge, future, wonder

Reception children have thought about all the different ways we can make and show five this week and extended their 3D shape understanding with building some 3D shape structures and considering how and why some buildings are not as stable as others. 

Nursery have been reviewing the shapes we have looked at so far this term (circle, triangle, square) and used the rhyme ‘five little speckled frogs’ to think about numbers that make up five. 

Big 3 and Me this week was about understanding others. We learned the British sign language signs for warm, lost and loving. We thought about how we could help people around us by getting to know them more. The animals set the challenge: Offer to help someone with something.

We all learned together about how the artist Kandinsky saw sound (he had synaesthesia) and painted his paintings. The children listened to 3 very different pieces of music: Let’s Dance by David Bowie, Streetwalking by Craig Wedren and Take Five by Dave Brubeck. We moved our bodies to the sound of each piece and then moved pencil on paper to draw when we listened the second time to create movement maps. 

The children talked about some of the places they have visited from around the world and we created a map of our journeys. Thank you so much for your support in sending in some images for the map. 

Next week at a glance

Next week we will be thinking about vehicles and transport. 

Our personal, social and emotional health focus will be ‘Caring and sharing’.

Notices:

The Reception children are now all reading books in phonics and will be bringing new books home every week. Please make sure they always have their reading books in their books bags and bring the bags to school every day. The day we change books will change depending on the timetable. 

Children need a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into to come into the classroom and a spare set of clothes, including pants and socks, for any accidents. These should be brought to school every day please. 

All nursery children should have wellies for outdoor play. 

Please make sure the children have a waterproof coat every day. We have outdoor play as often as possible and we need to be ready for changes in the weather. 

Please make sure the children have a sunhat/cap at school and their own sunscreen to use at school.
