Delphinus - Reflect and Review

Dear Dazzling Delphinus!

It’s been another busy week in Year 1 as we head into the final term - full of energy, growing confidence, and lots of lovely moments from the children.

This week in Maths, we continued our work on place Value (within 100) specifically focussing on the number line to 100, 1 more, 1 less, Comparing numbers with the same numbers of tens and Comparing any two numbers.

We found 1 more 1 less quite a difficult concept so stretched that out over two lessons to consolidate the key information.

Maths homework is week 5 and is due on Monday!

The physical activity distance tasks have now come to an end, we'd like to thank anyone that took part in the recording and sharing of their weekly activities, it was fascinating to see how far across the world map we could get using our collated distance.

This week in a Curious Quest we looked at the book ‘Dogger’. The children really enjoyed Dogger because it is a simple, relatable story with clear emotions that they could easily connect to. They were especially engaged by the idea of Dogger being lost and then found again, and this helped them understand feelings like worry, kindness, and happiness.

When writing about the characters, the children enjoyed describing Dogger and the little boy using their own ideas and vocabulary. They liked thinking about what the characters might be feeling and saying, and many were excited to share their opinions about what they would do if they were in the same situation.

The vocabulary they looked at this week included the words: THREADBARE, GRUBBY, OVERCROWDED, FLUTTERING, INQUISITIVE, SCOUTING, ABSENT, CROTCHETY.

They had fun pairing the words with actions, this really helps them to remember the vocabulary and gives them a chance to be silly!

Our class favourites this week were Overcrowded and Fluttering!

We read and we watched a talked through version of the book which you can now all access too : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNOYgRf5jes

In our wider curriculum this week, we focused on geography and explored maps. We looked at different types of maps, including treasure maps and world maps, and learned how they help us understand and find our way around places. We also used compasses to learn about North, South, East, and West, and practised navigating around the classroom using these directions. To finish, the children created their own classroom maps, using symbols and icons and adding a key to help explain what everything meant.

We also had forest school this Thursday with Lucy and as always had such an informative and refreshing time.

We are continuing to practise Tennis skills in PE on Fridays and have Athletics taught by the Sports Coach on Mondays.

Just as a side note, I know it's coming to the end of the year and jumpers are going missing and shoes are worn out, but unfortunately we still have quite a bit of rain! If we could try and make sure that the children still have indoor and outdoor shoes that would be amazing but please don't go out of your way to buy anything new.
