Delphinus - Reflect and Review
Dear Parents
This week in Maths we have consolidated the children’s learning with each child revisiting areas where they were less secure and needed more practice. A particular focus was on Number Fact Families which is when three numbers can make two addition sums and two subtraction sums. So 3, 7 and 10 would be shown as 3+7=10, 7+3=10, 10-3=7 and 10-7=3.
These number families show the children how adding and taking away are connected. Mr Frost, our Music Lead teacher was able to teach the first music lesson so children started exploring songs from the Hansel and Gretel opera. The children started learning the song "Little brother dance with me"; where the two children are bored of doing chores in the
house and decide to sing and dance together. We used clapping and actions to help us learn the rhythms and words within the song. To ensure the children all have a good knowledge of this fairytale, in English we continued with Drawing Club and explored the text more deeply, looking at two versions of the story, writing about our own Gingerbread house creations and why the wicked witch wanted to fatten up Hansel! In handwriting we practised the Zigzag monster family (v w x z) and will return next week to capital letters and number formation. In history this term we are looking at space explorers: we tuned in to the amazing live stream of the Space X Dragon capsule’s splashdown in the Pacific with children simultaneously discussing and drawing what they saw, and the vocabulary and information they acquired and questions raised were annotated to be used later in the term, including what IS the illness one of the astronauts has? Children used their knowledge of day and
night, and how the Earth orbits the sun to answer the question: why is the splashdown happening at night when it is light in the United Kingdom? We coupled this with the book The Magic School Bus: Lost In Space and began to think about the factual texts that we might write in the weeks ahead. Children may want to watch this cartoon version of the
book.
Other information
We have started using the school field again so please ensure that children come with indoor shoes or wellies. There are several students who do not currently seem to have them and when it is muddy, children won’t be allowed on the field if they do not have changes of shoes.
Coming up
We will get back to our Science work on materials and Curious Quests will begin. At home, over the next two weeks, please could you support your child with number formation 0 to 9.
